Most early symptoms are from higher-than-normal levels of glucose, a kind of sugar, in your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/heart\/anatomy-picture-of-blood\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">blood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The warning signs can be so mild that you don&#8217;t notice them. That&#8217;s especially true of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/type-2-diabetes\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>. Some people don&#8217;t find out they have it until they get problems from long-term damage caused by the disease.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/type-1-diabetes\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">type 1 diabetes<\/a>, the symptoms usually happen quickly, in a matter of days or a few weeks. They&#8217;re much more severe, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Early Signs of Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p>Both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/understanding-diabetes-symptoms\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">types of diabetes<\/a>\u00a0have some of the same telltale warning signs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/features\/top-10-ways-to-deal-with-hunger\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\"><strong>Hunger<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/why-so-tired-10-causes-fatigue\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\"><strong>fatigue<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Your body converts the food you eat into glucose that your cells use for energy. But your cells need\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/diabetes-types-insulin\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">insulin<\/a>\u00a0to take in glucose. If your body doesn&#8217;t make enough or any insulin, or if your cells resist the insulin your body makes, the glucose can&#8217;t get into them and you have no energy. This can make you hungrier and more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/ss\/slideshow-fatigue-causes-and-remedies\" data-crosslink-type=\"slideshow\" data-metrics-link=\"\">tired<\/a> than usual.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Peeing more often and being thirstier.<\/strong>\u00a0The average person usually has to pee between four and seven times in 24 hours, but people with diabetes may go a lot more. Why? Normally, your body reabsorbs glucose as it passes through your kidneys. But when diabetes pushes your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/how-sugar-affects-diabetes\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">blood sugar<\/a>\u00a0up, your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/understanding-kidney-disease-basic-information\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">kidneys<\/a>\u00a0may not be able to bring it all back in. This causes the body to make more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/urinary-incontinence-oab\/truth-about-urine\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">urine<\/a>, and that takes fluids. The result: You&#8217;ll have to go more often. You might pee out more, too. Because you&#8217;re peeing so much, you can get very thirsty. When you drink more, you&#8217;ll also pee more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/ss\/slideshow-dry-mouth\" data-crosslink-type=\"slideshow\" data-metrics-link=\"\"><strong>Dry mouth<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/why-so-itchy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\"><strong>itchy skin<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Because your body is using fluids to make pee, there&#8217;s less moisture for other things. You could get dehydrated, and your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/ss\/slideshow-mouth-problems\" data-crosslink-type=\"slideshow\" data-metrics-link=\"\">mouth<\/a>\u00a0may feel dry.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Dry skin<\/a> can make you itchy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/why-is-my-vision-blurry\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\"><strong>Blurred vision<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Changing fluid levels in your body could make the lenses in your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/picture-of-the-eyes\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">eyes<\/a>\u00a0swell up. They change shape and can\u2019t focus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p>You might notice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unplanned weight loss.<\/strong>\u00a0If your body can&#8217;t get energy from your food, it will start burning muscle and fat for energy instead. You may\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">lose weight<\/a>\u00a0even though you haven&#8217;t changed how you eat. This serious complication can lead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/uncontrolled-blood-sugar-risks\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">diabetic coma<\/a>\u00a0and even death with either type of diabetes, though it\u2019s more common in type 2. It happens when your blood sugar gets too high and your body gets severely dehydrated.
